Netgear
Overview
If you have not yet registered for our filtering service, you can do so by visiting our registration page. Connect to the control panel by entering the IP address of the Netgear router in the address bar of any browser. Then, log in by entering your administrative credentials.
Configure the Device DNS
First, you need to configure the DNS of the device. To do this, click on the Advanced section and then open the Installation menu. Next, click on Internet Configuration. In the window that opens, look for the entry DNS Address Domain Name Server and click on Use these DNS servers. Then, enter the address 185.236.104.104 as the primary DNS and 185.236.105.105 as the secondary DNS. Click on the Apply button to save the changes.
Configure Dynamic DNS Service
To configure the Dynamic DNS service, open the Advanced Configuration menu and then click on Dynamic DNS. Check the Use a Dynamic DNS service item and fill in the various fields exactly as follows:
- Service Provider: Select www.DynDNS.org.
- Host name: Enter any name you like, for example, the word Filter.
- User Name: Enter the specific username assigned to your dynamic network inside our dashboard. Do not use your main account registration email.
- Password: Enter the specific password assigned to your dynamic network.
Finally, click Apply to make the changes active.
Enable the DHCP Server
At this point, you can enable the DHCP Server so that it automatically assigns network parameters to the various internal devices. Open the Installation menu and click on LAN Settings. Enable the Use router as DHCP server item and enter the first and last IP of your DHCP range in the Start IP Address and End IP Address fields respectively.
The DHCP Server will distribute the local IP of the Netgear router as the only DNS for your clients. Since the DNS of the router itself has been previously changed to our cloud addresses, all network traffic will be correctly routed and filtered.
Alternatively, the DNS settings of the various devices within the network can be changed manually one by one.
Optional: Deny DNS Changes by Users
It is possible to increase security by denying users the ability to browse unfiltered by manually changing the DNS on their local devices. To do this, proceed as follows:
Open the Security menu and click on Firewall Rules. At this point, you need to create rules to block all outbound traffic on port 53 for both TCP and UDP protocols, except for requests directed specifically to our cloud IPs.
Click on the +Add button and fill in the page as follows:
- Services: Choose the DNS TCP and UDP port 53 item from the drop-down menu.
- Action: Select ALWAYS Allow.
- LAN Users: Leave the Any item selected.
- WAN Server: Choose Unique Address.
- Start: Enter the IP 185.236.104.104.
Click Apply to save.
Now you need to create another rule exactly similar to the previous one, except for the IP address of the Start field, which must be 185.236.105.105.
Finally, you need to create a rule to block all DNS traffic directed to external IPs other than our own cloud addresses. Proceed as follows:
- Services: Choose the DNS TCP and UDP port 53 item.
- Action: Select the BLOCK always item.
- LAN users: Leave Any.
- WAN Servers: Leave Any.
Then click the Apply button to create the final rule.
